Emergency Lighting in Leicester & Leicestershire

When the mains supply fails, emergency lighting is what stops a panicked evacuation turning into a serious incident. For any non-domestic premises in Leicestershire, the law is clear: under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and BS 5266-1 (the British Standard for the design, installation and maintenance of emergency lighting), you must provide adequate illumination along escape routes, at changes in direction, and at fire safety equipment locations.
Bryants Fire designs, installs, and maintains emergency lighting systems across Leicester, Leicestershire, and the surrounding Midlands. That includes maintained systems (where the emergency fitting stays lit continuously and switches to its internal battery on mains failure), non-maintained systems (which only illuminate during a power cut), and self-test LED systems that automatically run their own function and duration checks and flag any faults via a status LED.
Every installation is designed from a proper lighting plan — we don’t simply replace like-for-like. Stairwells, corridors, open areas over 60m², disabled refuges, and final exits all carry specific lux requirements under BS 5266, and getting coverage right first time is cheaper than doing it twice.

Monthly Flick Tests & Annual Duration Tests

The standard requires two things from the responsible person: a monthly short “flick test” to confirm each fitting illuminates on battery, and an annual full-duration test lasting the system’s rated emergency period — usually three hours. Both must be recorded in your fire log book.
We handle both as part of our emergency lighting service contracts. During the annual test we also check battery condition (most sealed lead-acid and NiCd packs need replacing every four to five years), lamp output, and general fitting condition. You receive a signed BS 5266 certificate after each visit, ready for your insurer or fire risk assessor.
For Leicester clients, we combine emergency lighting servicing with fire alarm servicing on the same visit wherever possible — one engineer, one invoice, less disruption to your working day.
